Dr. Konstantinides is appointed Full Professor for Clinical Trials and Medical Director of the multidisciplinary Center for Thrombosis and Haemostasis (CTH) at the University of Mainz, Germany. The CTH is dedicated to integrated patient care and translational research, and funded by the federal German government. Dr. Konstantinides is also appointed Professor of Cardiology at the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece. He graduated from the Medical School of the Aristotle University in Thessalonica, Greece, in 1987 with honors. He then completed his clinical training in Cardiology and defended his thesis at the University of Freiburg Germany. In 1993, he published his thesis as first author in the New England Journal of Medicine. He has worked as consultant cardiologist, Assistant and Assocciate Professor of Medicine at the Universities of Freiburg and Goettingen, Germany, and as a research associate and visiting professor at the Department of Vascular Biology, the Scripps Research Intitute, La Jolla, CA, USA.

For the past 25 years, his research has been focusing on basic mechanisms of thrombosis, and on the risk stratification and risk-adapted antithrombotic management of venous thromboembolism. He has published over 210 papers in peer-reviewed journals with a cumulative impact factor of almost 1,000 and over 9,000 personal citations, and more than 25 book chapters. He has designed and coordinated, and/or has been principal investigator of several high-impact national and international multicenter trials, 7 of which have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine. His research has funded by national and European peer reviewed granting agencies for over 15 years.

Dr. Konstantinides is leading member of numerous national and European committees, working groups and networks focusing on the pulmonary circulation and right ventricular function as well as on continuing medical education and early-stage career support. Between 2012 and 2014, he chaired the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) task force for the 2014 update of the Guidelines on the Management of Acute Pulmonary Embolism. Currently (2014-2016), he chairs the ESC’s Working Group on Pulmonary Circulation and Right Ventricular Function.

Fionnuala Ní Ainle is a Consultant Haematologist at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH) and Rotunda Maternity Hospital, Dublin. She is also a Professor in the School of Medicine, UCD. She is privileged to treat patients affected with thrombosis and has a strong interest in women’s issues in thrombosis and haemostasis. She acts as Chair of her Hospital and Regional venous thromboembolism (VTE) committees and is a founder member of VTE Ireland, a National Clinical VTE Working Group. She is co-organizer of the “VTE Dublin” thrombosis conference.

Her research interests explore the role of blood coagulation and extracellular vesicles in the aetiology, management and therapy of clinical disorders, particularly disorders of pregnancy. Along with Assoc. Prof. Patricia Maguire, she co-directs the UCD Conway Institute SPHERE Research Group and is actively involved in international clinical trials.

Dr. Le Gal is a Professor in the Division of Hematology of the Department of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, a physician in the Thrombosis Program, Division of Hematology at The Ottawa Hospital, and a Senior Scientist in the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, Clinical Epidemiology Program.

Dr. Le Gal’s primary research interest is the diagnosis and management of VTE. He has over 200 peer-reviewed publications in general internal medicine and specialized journals. He is a member of the international advisory board of the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and a reviewer for main general internal medicine and thrombosis journals. He has been the principal investigator of several multicenter multinational projects on the diagnosis and management of VTE.
